In the year 1830. Piyali Phukan (or Piyoli Phukan / Pioli Phukan) was one of the earliest Assamese leaders to raise voice against foreigners (Britsh) rule. He was hanged by British in 1830 after he was found guilty of masterminding a conspiracy to drive away the British from Assam. Piyali Phukan is the first Assamese Martyr of Indian freedom fight.

This title is not used for any other vaishnava reformer, except Sankaradeva’s chief disciple Sri Madhavdeva. The teachings of Sankaradeva were based on Bhagavata Purana and thus his new religion was initially known as Bhagavati Dharma. But soon the disciples started to eulogize Sankardeva and Madhavadeva as Mahapurusha, and the religion came to be known as the Mahapurushiya Dharma.

An Ankia Naat is an one act play, popular in Assam, India. In Assam, the presentation of an Ankia Naat is called a Bhaona. Ankia Naats are the creation of Great Assamese saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. Ankia Naats were written in an language called Brajavali (mixture of Assamese-Maithili) and are primarily centered on the acts of Lord Krishna. The Ankia Naat presentations are accompanied by instruments, singers, dance and specially designed costumes. Ankia Naat or Bhaona is one of the key ingredients of rich Assamese culture.

A Borgeet is a vaishnava devotional song, popular in Assam. Literally meaning great songs, Borgeets were composed by Srimanta Sankardev and Sri Madhavdev in 15th to 16th century. They were written in Brajaboli language. The first Borgeet “Mana meri rama-charanahi lagu” was composed by the Srimanta Sankardeva at Badrikashrama during his first pilgrimage. There were 240 Borgeets written by Sankardev, out of which only few exists today. Madhabdev also authored more than 100 Borgets.
Borgeets are lyrical songs with specific raga. They express the religious sentiments of the poets reacting to different situations. Borgeets are practiced in Sattras, the monasteries of Ekasarana Dharma. Outside the religious context, Borgeets now enjoys an important position in the world of Assamese Music.

      Actually until now no one from Assam has become the CJ of the Supreme Court of India. We have Justice Mr. Parvati Kumar Goswami, who was the first Assamese judge (NOT CJ) in the SC. Kindly find his biography here:
